It is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city and is conveniently located in the middle of the UK with excellent transport links to other UK cities - we are just over two hours from London by train. Sheffield is a multi-cultural city with great shopping and fantastic nightlife. We also have outstanding sports facilities, with the city described as the sporting capital of the UK. Sheffield is also home to the UK's largest theatre complex outside London and a number of award-winning art galleries and museums. There are also many international supermarkets and restaurants around the city.
Our modern campuses and excellent facilities
The University has two campuses which are centrally located and provide excellent, modern facilities. We have some of the most advanced teaching and learning facilities in the country, with more than £100 million invested in the past ten years. We have a well-resourced learning centre on each campus with access to thousands of books, academic papers and journals, international newspapers and films. We also have a multi-faith centre which provides information about religious groups in the University and the city.
Top quality teaching and research
Our academic staff are leaders in their field and carry out national and international research projects at the forefront of innovation and development. We are renowned for the quality of our applied research and have one of the highest levels of research-generated income of any new UK university. We have 12 subject areas rated as excellent by the National Assessment Body.
We have a broad portfolio of research across 21 research centres and eight research groups. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise 2008, our research activity has been rated as follows
- 96 per cent of our research to be of national standard
- 68 per cent was rated as international quality
- Sheffield Hallam University are placed sixth for research quality and volume compared with all other modern universities
