The University of Sheffield
The University of Sheffield is one of the UK’s top universities, with an international reputation for cutting-edge research, teaching excellence, and an outstanding student experience.
Our founding motto Rerum Cognoscere Causas – “To discover the cause of things” – has been the driving force of our success in world class research and teaching, with outstanding public acknowledgement for our endeavours including several Nobel Prize winners, the award of 4 Queens Anniversary Prizes, and numerous accolades and awards for our organisation and staff. In November 2011 we were even named ‘UK University Of The Year‘ at the Times Higher Education Awards.
With around 6,000 staff across 50 departments in five faculties and 25,000 students, our efforts in discovery benefit from the rich diversity and talent of our university community. Currently we are home to students from 117 different countries.
Our standing as a world-class university has been repeatedly confirmed by our excellent performance in rigorous external assessments. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, 93% of our submissions were rated internationally recognised, internationally excellent, or world-leading, placing us in the UK Top 10 for research quality.
The University’s rankings in independent tables are consistently excellent. For 2012/13 the QS World University Rankings rated us 66th in the world – up from 72nd in 2011.The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012/13 put us 14th in the UK, 40th in Europe, and 110th in the world.
In the most recent National Student Survey (2012) we received further national acclaim coming top in the region and fourth in the Russell Group, maintaining an overall satisfaction score of 90 per cent for the second year running. Our Students' Union was rated the best in Britain

The greenery is throughout the city from the centre, where the Winter Gardens is Europe's largest city centre temperate glasshouse, to the countryside, where the Peak District national park is only ten minutes away from the University.
Government statistics rate Sheffield as one of the safest UK cities and one of the cheapest to live in.
