University of Central Lancashire
The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is a ‘modern’ university, created in 1992, but its roots go back to 1828 with the founding of the ‘Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge’. UCLan has evolved over the years to become a world class institution, recognised with its inclusion in the 2010 QS World Rankings – the first Modern University in the UK to gain this status. With 11 areas of research judged ‘world leading’ in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, UCLan has the global recognition of its peers, with a focus on applied research, including the identification of human remains in mass disasters, the development of new sign languages, and a variety of health-related research initiatives that are helping to change lives around the world. It is truly a global institution which has more than 32,000 students from over 120 nationalities and is sixth largest University in UK.
UCLan main campus is in Preston, England, UK, which is an excellent location for International students. Getting about is easy – the bus and train stations are a short walk from the Campus, which has a compact, friendly feel. Most of the buildings are within a ten minute walk of each other and there are fantastic new facilities for business, health and science, along with cutting edge study environments in technology, arts and humanities.
Amongst its programme portfolio of some 500 undergraduate and 200+ postgraduate courses, UCLan has been at the forefront of developing degrees in the emerging disciplines of Journalism, Fashion, Forensics and Sports Science. The range of excellence extends to include the likes of Pharmacy, Architecture, Astrophysics and the first new School of Dentistry to be launched in the UK in more than a century.
The University aims to create the perfect blend of knowledge, practical experience and relevance to equip its graduates with the confidence and skills they need to get ahead in the world of work. Not only are employability skills embedded into every degree programme, but the sector-defining ‘futures’ careers and employability service offers help and advice, courses and work experience opportunities to help UCLan graduates’ CVs stand out from the pack. Capital investment in outstanding facilities and a dedicated student support service, The ‘i’, combined to help UCLan be awarded the accolade ‘Times Higher Top Modern University for Student Experience 2010’.
With a world class academic reputation firmly rooted in relevance, UCLan is focused on a future of providing innovative thinking – for the real world.
The Students' Union is at the heart of student life on campus and our new £6.5 million building boasts some of the best facilities in the country, including retail and catering outlets, a print shop and our very own radio station and magazine. In 2005 the new entertainments venue, 53° was voted Students’ Union of the Year by the British Entertainments and Disco Association (BEDA).
The large population of UCLan students has turned Preston into an energetic city with a buzzing nightlife and a growing arts scene, surrounded by pubs, clubs and eateries that provide worldwide cuisine to cater for every palette. There’s a range of entertainment venues, including the Guild Hall and Charter Theatre, providing year round entertainment, such as major sporting events, ballet, drama, concerts and much, much more. Sport and recreation are a major part of student life and we have first rate facilities both on campus and on our doorstep. Outdoor sports can be enjoyed at the nearby UCLan Sports Arena which offer facilities for team sports, racket sports, outdoor pursuits, fitness and athletics.
The cost of living in the Central Lancashire region is generally lower than in many other parts of the UK. All accommodation is self catering and you will find very reasonably priced shops and food outlets on or close to the campus.
