The University of Abertay Dundee is an internationally recognised institution dating back to 1888, when it was founded to offer higher education opportunities to working people in Dundee. Today, the University is recognised for its achievements in teaching, learning and research that directly support the industries of today and the future.
Dundee is Scotland's fourth largest city with a population of about 150,000. It is located on the banks of the River Tay on the East Coast of Scotland and has excellent road, rail and air links to all major cities across the UK. Dundee offers an excellent quality of life combining all the shopping, cultural and entertainment benefits of city living with easy access to surrounding countryside and nearby beaches.
The University's teaching and learning has been judged to be of excellent quality in economics and environmental sciences, and its research in psychology, environmental sciences, and law is recognised to be of world-class standard. Of the University's approximately 5,000 students, across five Schools (faculties), around two-thirds are from Scotland – but almost 80 countries are represented in its student community. Abertay is right in the heart of Dundee, combining all the advantages of a close knit campus with the city centre life. All our buildings are within a few hundred metres of each other. The bus and train stations along with shopping malls, food outlets, cinemas, theatres and places of worship for major religions are just a few minutes walk away.
The University's world-leading development of computing and creative and digital arts degree programmes has resulted in it being named the UK's first National Centre of Excellence in Computer Games Education. The University has Skillset Media Academy status (a government scheme recognising excellence in HE for industry) and its Dare to be Digital International Creative competition is supported by the British Council, BBC, Microsoft, Electronic Arts and more.
Abertay launched Scotland's first degrees in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology and scored a world-first with the launch of its undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Ethical Hacking and Countermeasures. Another speciality is the world-leading Computer Games Technology and Computer Arts degrees.
With our friendly, welcoming and supportive environment, there's a real 'Abertay family' feel to the campus. And we have a particular focus on preparing our students for the world of work through our unique approach to studio-based learning, in which our students tackle real-world challenges alongside experienced practitioners and research.
