The University of Aberdeen
Founded in 1495, The University of Aberdeen is currently ranked in the top 1% of the world’s universities. As one of the UK’s most international distinguished seats of learning, Aberdeen benefits from a diverse faculty and student population drawn from 120 different countries. Over 20% of our 16,000 strong student cohort is made up of international students, and this number is growing stronger every year. Aberdeen has an excellent reputation for teaching quality and research. Over the year, five Nobel Prizes have been awarded for work carried out or begun at Aberdeen. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) assessed 89% of Aberdeen’s research as being of international quality, and 55% as either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. As one of the six Ancient Universities of Britain, students are attracted by our tradition which is rooted in our 500 year history; however, we are firmly focused on the future and at the cutting-edge in many disciplines within the Arts and Social Sciences (including Law), in Science, Computing, Engineering and Technology, and in ground-breaking disciplines such as Bio-Medical Computing Science.
We offer a broad range of internationally recognised and respected programmes at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate level. Offering unique programme options that carry professional accreditation and scholarship opportunities, industrial placements, plus the opportunity to study abroad in Europe, North America, Hong Kong or Korea, our experience and connections can help secure that all-important first step on the ladder to a successful career. Situated in the Energy Capital of Europe, Aberdeen boasts of especially excellent industrial links with the Oil and Gas and Renewable Energy sector. Across the University, 93% of our graduates walk into good jobs, research posts or further study within six months of graduating, and we are currently ranked as 7th most successful University in the UK at conversion of students to the graduate job place. In addition to these research, study, and employment strengths, our attraction also lies in our superb facilities, and the care and support that we provide for our students. In 2011 we opened the doors of our Library, which houses over one million printed volumes, an extensive database of electronic resources, and an enviable historic collections and archive that contains many items of national significance. 2007 saw the completion of our Olympic-standard Sports Village, and spring 2014 will bring the opening of our Olympic-standard Aquatic Centre, both of which are located less than 10 minutes walk from the heart of the campus. We have over 50 sports clubs that compete at inter-university and national level, and over 150 social clubs that encompass a broad spectrum of extra-curricular interests. As a campus-based university, we guarantee accommodation to all first year students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in our Halls of Residence, and there is also an abundance of private accommodation options situated close to the university if students prefer that option. Beyond the university, Aberdeen city is a diverse, cosmopolitan and thriving place, with plenty of part-time job opportunities for our students. Historic, fashionable and friendly, and recently voted best place to be a student in the UK by a leading accommodation website, it is the perfect place to live and study. There has truly never been a better time to join the friendly and dynamic community at the University of Aberdeen, so what are you waiting for?
